Mustain mania

Quarterback controversy is the story out of the Hogs' 50-14 loss. Starter Robert Johnson was booed early and often. Frosh phenom Mitch Mustain orchestrated one lightning drive against a mopup USC defense. Harry King is reluctant to say Mustain is the messiah.

For much of the night, Robert Johnson deserved a pat on the back, at least for perseverance. Maligned by the fans and dumped by the coaches in 2005, Johnson performed acceptably Saturday night against the No. 6 team in the country in front of a national television audience.

For more than a year, the junior from Waco has been stereotyped as a good athlete who wilts when the lights come on. With USC in town, bright lights are part of the show.

But, Johnson did OK, particularly considering the USC rush that was constantly in his face. Don't get suckered by what happened when things got out of hand in the final 20 minutes of USC's 50-14 victory.

The D-G's Wally Hall is reflective of what likely will be mainstream fan sentiment.

Long before the fourth quarter, people were wondering why Mustain wasn’t playing and where the no-huddle offense was.

It was time to use both long before they were seen Saturday night.
