Speaking of swimming against the tide: Here's Stephens Media on Rep. John Boozman, who mindlessly echoes the mindless with his stay-the-course pap on Iraq, newly fortified by expert witness from a brief and highly secure foray into the Green Zone bunker in Baghdad. Democratic opponent Woody Anderson may have an uphill battle, but he gets point for being right.
Anderson said troop withdrawals should begin immediately.
"I think we need to start now bringing our troops home and we need to make it clear that we're not a crutch for the Iraqi government," Anderson said.
Boozman said he saw signs that the fledgling Iraqi leadership was solidifying to form a diverse, stable government. He said he was pleased with efforts to protect the rights of minority groups....
While in Iraq, Boozman was part of a delegation that was briefed by Gen. George Casey, the U.S. military commander. The group also met with Iraqi President Jalal Talibani and other government leaders at Talibani's home.
Anderson said he doubted the upbeat report delivered by Boozman. He said he thought the briefings were probably too optimistic.
"I don't think flying in, getting a briefing, getting a few meals and patting the backs of some soldiers can give you a good enough idea that things are improving," Anderson said.
