Huckabee wastes no time politicizing terror plot

Gov. Mike Huckabee doesn't miss an opportunity to politicize a straightforward security incident.

Only hours after the airline bombing plot was announced, he's trying to score points in the New Hampshire press.

“It should give some pause to the President’s most vocal critics who have said this is unnecessary, to engage in surveillance and to try to really do a thorough job of intelligence gathering. Because clearly, intelligence gathering is exactly what gave the authorities the opportunity to apprehend these people before they were able to carry out their intentions,” he said in a phone interview.

Huckabee, a Republican considering a possible run for the Presidency, will be in the state through Sunday, speaking at a variety of events.

Domestic surveillance may make some people nervous, he said. “On the other hand, on a day like today, you’re kind of glad someone is catching this stuff,” he said.

Thursday, Huckabee was on his way to perform with his band “Capitol Offense,” at a campaign event for Executive Councilor Ray Wieczorek.

Now that Huckabee is finished destroying that straw man, let's consider his remarks.

No one suggested that domestic surveillance should not take place, and of course everyone is glad that law enforcement authorities are "catching this stuff."

Some people have a problem with federal officials willfully ignoring federal laws governing domestic surveillance and, in some instances, violating the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits unreasonable searches.

It's not difficult to get a warrant to spy on suspected terrorists. Has Huckabee been briefed on the British investigation? Does he know how the surveillance was conducted?

Probably not, since he was flying to New Hampshire to campaign for president.
