Hillcrest attack

Several readers were curious about the police item in the paper this morning about a man who attacked a couple having lunch yesterday at Leo's restaurant on Kavanaugh with a piece of rebar. He was arrested, but no explanation was offered for the attack.

Some details that weren't in the paper: The couple was from out of state, according to the police report. The attack was unprovoked as far as anyone can tell. The attacker, who was black, reportedly called the victims "white devils."

Also: Police spokesman Terry Hastings said the suspect, Jared Jones, had a lengthy rap sheet, including drug and obstruction charges that suggest he's an unstable character. The crime is another commentary on the bed shortage at the County Jail. Hastings said Jones was arrested June 17 for several charges, including loitering and obstruction (this generally means resisting an officer, as Jones allegedly did Monday). He was released, then arrested again July 23 for failure to appear in court, but quickly released. A day later, he was arrested for brutalizing an unsuspecting pair of New Mexican visitors with a piece of steel. The first-degree battery charge under which he is now being held is an offense on which he won't be "cited out," Hastings said.
