At the Game and Fish announcement today, the governor was asked about a special session to deal with the state’s growing surplus. He reported that legislators seemed cool to the idea. As we noted before, they’ve shown admirable restraint in preferring to deal at a regular session comprehensively with multiple state needs and perhaps some carefully conceived tax reductions. Huckabee couldn’t resist tossing off a line about how taxpayers would do better with money in their bank account now. The only way to interpret that is support for a round of rebate checks, quickly spent and forgotten and the state left with only hundreds of millions in continuing school, prison and health needs to show for it. The people are smarter than that. So is Huckabee. But it’ll sound good on the news tonight.
