Results of the annual Arkansas Press Association contest were announced yesterday in Hot Springs. The Arkansas Times picked up three first-place awards. Though a weekly, we compete against the largest dailies in the state (our editorial staff of nine compares with 250 or so at the Democrat-Gazette). Our winners: Bob Lancaster for a humorous column; Ernest Dumas, as a free-lancer, for his cover story on the governor's bond proposals; Tommy Durham, creator of "Orval," for editorial cartoons. Also picking up awards below the first-place level were David Koon (news story on sexual predator lawyers); Leslie Peacock (feature story on the ivory-billed woodpecker); staff (coverage of education, as illustrated in six articles over the course of 2005); Mike Gauldin (editorial cartoons). Not bad for an illegitimate newspaper.
