As part of a nationwide reorganization and because of its acquisition of Maytag, Whirlpool
is closing its dryer plant in Searcy
at the end of 2006, which will put some 625 people out of work, the Searcy Chamber of Commerce said. The chamber is announcing the usual lineup of actions for displaced workers, including a half-off tuition offer from Harding University to retrain those who'll lose jobs. All told, Whirlpool is shedding
4,500 jobs nationally.
