Friendly fire

Others in the media have joined our protest of Gov. Mike Huckabee's decision to stop notifying the Arkansas Times of news conferences and other news because he doesn't like what we write. This letter went to him Friday, from the board of group representing the state's working journalists (And KUAR reports on it here, including his non-response):

The Board of Directors of the Arkansas Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists recognizes that disagreements between elected officials and news organizations are inevitable.

However, we also recognize the importance of an uninterrupted, free flow of information from government to the public. Therefore, we encourage you to ensure that all news outlets, including the Arkansas Times and KUAR, receive or continue to receive all office news releases and notices regarding your official schedule sent via e-mail.

We feel the public is best served when access to the relevant information generated by your office is shared equally with any news outlet that requests to receive e-mail distribution.

As of Monday afternoon, the group had received no response from the governor. Thrasher says the national SPJ organization had expressed an interest in the situation.
