The Stephens Media Group may partner with Gannett and MediaNews Group to purchase three newspapers in Northern California, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Stephens, headquartered in Las Vegas, operates the Arkansas News Bureau in Little Rock and owns several newspapers around the state, as well in Nevada.
Of course, Gannett bought the Arkansas Gazette in the 1980s and after only a few years sold it to WEHCO media, which already owned the Arkansas Democrat (thus creating the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette). Now Stephens' newspapers are engaged in fierce competition with WEHCO papers in Northwest Arkansas.
The LATimes article says Stephens is alligned with Gannett and MediaNews through the California Newspapers Partnership, which owns 23 papers there, including the Oakland Tribune, Pasadena Star-News and San Bernardino Sun.
