The Academic All-Star Team is the product of two rounds of judging. The first round produces a list of 40 students — 20 males and 20 females — from which the 20 all-stars (10 males and 10 females) are chosen by a panel of educators.

The choices were difficult. Many of these students were valedictorians and winners of prestigious prizes. One finalist, for example, played on four state championship teams in volleyball and Quiz Bowl.
