Bill Halter announces Democratic campaign for governor

Posted by Max Brantley on Fri, Jan 25, 2013 at 12:49 PM

HES IN: Democrat Bill Halter to run for governor.
  • HE'S IN: Democrat Bill Halter to run for governor.

With Dustin McDaniel's withdrawal from the 2014 race for governor not yet fully official, this e-mail arrives from Bud Jackson, political operative for Bill Halter:

Little Rock - Former lieutenant governor Bill Halter will file paperwork next week to establish a campaign committee as the necessary first administrative step towards a campaign for governor in 2014. A formal announcement will be declared at a later date.

“Over the holidays my family and I talked about the demands a campaign for governor would place on us,” said Halter. “We decided as a family that we are up for the challenge. That’s why next week I will take the first necessary step towards running for governor in 2014.”

“During my campaign for governor I will put forward my plans and ideas to move Arkansas towards an even brighter future,” said Halter.

What a coincidence. Feels kind of oily to me, frankly.

Mike Beebe and the Arkansas Democratic Party need to get behind Halter and they need to do it yesterday. The BIG question, though, is will they? And, if not, why not?

1) "Oily" in what way? In that maybe Halter waited for McDaniel to withdraw? Or that Halter waited to hear Halter was running? Or that maybe some Halter support(s) convinced McDaniel to withdraw?

2) Where do I send my check. We've got to keep the governor's office in Demo hands..... and get the House and Senate back, too.

I had already made up my mind that I would not be voting for Dustin McDaniel. If there was no other vatable candidate, I was not going to vote in the governer's race. I decision was not based on his personal life, but what he has done and not done in his current office.

Hip Hip Hurrray! Bill Halter! WooHooo! Now I have a decent democrat to vote for.

Bill needs to concentrate on getting the Lt. Governor's office back. If ever a man and an office were so perfectly suited to each other. If this is the best the Dems can do it will be time to close the door and turn out the light.

Where's Vic Snyder when you need him?

Team Halter here. We must have a Democratic governor with this kind of legislature. If Halter's in, I'm in with him.

I will happily and without hesitation vote for the Democratic gubernatorial nominee in 2014. However, Halter has many intra-party fences to mend, given the 2010, post-primary actions of some of his supporters. I read on this blog many times that progressives "stayed away in droves" on election day. This actually did more that simply make John Boozman a US Senator, it helped make Tim Griffin Little Rock's congressman, and assisted imbeciles into the SOS and Lt. Gov offices. Hence, many D's around the state, fairly or not, are not fond of Halter. Halter needs to address this, or we will have a Governor Asa Hutchinson taking the oath of office in Jan. 2015.

Durango is right, The State Democratic Party needs to get over whatever problem they have with Halter. He's a much better candidate than any of the others who have been mentioned.

We need Halter in the Governors office & Beebe in the senate.

Halter needs to be Governor so he can counterbalance any legislative nastiness put forth by the Republicans.

Only problem with Halter, other than demonstrated electability issues, is that he belongs in the Senate. Somebody do the math for me: when would Halter head to Washington if he becomes gov in 2015?

Otherwise, all those 'progressives' that failed the D party last time won't be so squeamish about a preposterously qualified candidate who can speak bidness and social justice at the same time--given the alternative of the Ledge and Spring Street both going to the most ignorant, greedy bunch of hypocrites "since Reconstruction," to use the popular (unironicallly echoed) self-congratulatory wording of the state GOP.

I can't decide whether or not to credit Team Halter for getting JMcD out of the race. Ultimately, it's all on the AG, of course: Never sleep with anyone crazier than you... But if it comes out that Halter's loyal nerds have been trolling the interweb all along... I just don't care for minions--but maybe they're a political necessity. Bill, bring on some more Arkies, seriously. My people will call your people, of course.

Sometimes a little oil is necessary to get the cogs turning.

I, for one, welcome our new Democratic Overlord.

Would this be the same Bill Halter who had the Garland County Dumbocratic Election Commission Chairman illegally open early voting during his primary and made it a point to just happen to be touring early voting places in courthouses across the state during early voting although talking to voters waiting in line to vote or campaigning inside of a polling place where only voters and election officials (and bona-fide observers) are permitted. Yep, that's what Arkansas needs, real ethical leadership in the Guv's office. When Guv Beebe came to our county during early voting, he had a rally but made it a point to stay a block away from the 100' zone. Ladies and germs, therein lies the difference in the quality of candidate. I'm dreaming of a Red 2014 election sweep given what has surfaced so far on the other side.

I'm good with it, hope he wins. Hope it also gives him the chance to run either one of those two &*^&*^ in the senate back to the west podunk dog pound clean-up squad.

I am NOT good with it. Bill Halter arrived back in Arkansas after an extended absence. He claimed ties to Bill Clinton but the fact is, he served as head of the Social Security Administrator under GEORGE W. BUSH. The image he tried to sell was not the whole truth and nothing but the truth. He claimed to be a key advisor to General Wesley Clark in his Presidential bid. I was on the Clark Campaign Staff and know Halter disparaged the General after the campaign was over, insulted Mrs. Clark, and was not there for the cause but there for his own advancement. He began his current political career with broadside attacks on Mike Beebe and saying he was going to run for Governor. He garnered a number of donations for this purpose and only switched to the Lt. Governor's race when it was shown he could not win a primary against Beebe, a true Arkansas Democrat who has a long career working for our state. Yes, I was one of the Lt. Governor candidates. He stole one of the ideas I and many others had spent years promoting and tried to make it seem like he made it happen. So yes I was directly affected by his ambitious and callous clamour for power. Many demonized Blanche Lambert Lincoln and yes she did oppose some issues I and many progressives supported. The point is Senator Lincoln through the democratic process but where was Bill Halter for her, once she won the nomination fair and square? He did nothing to help her in the General Election and as a result we ended up with a Republican Senator. Bill Halter cares about Bill Halter, only those synchophants that serve his immediate purpose, and no one else. He has never been loyal to the Democrats and he is not loyal to our state. Bill Halter is a poor choice for Arkansas. I will not support him.

See this is the Halter machine's way of trying to divert attention away from facts.

This thread is not about me. But FOR THE RECORD, I never was anything but accused. Never charged by the police, never convicted by a court of law. And until things change legally, we all are innocent until proven guilty.

So attack the messenger all you want, but the truth I speak about Bill Halter and plan to continue to speak is truth! He was charged by Arkansas Democrats and in the 2010 U.S. Senate primary CONVICTED.

And where has Bill Halter been since he lost?

I was too busy to join in the Halter celebration yesterday, I knew it was going on and I did my jumping up & down away from the computer keyboard.....almost as much fun!

The only decent politician Arkansas has had for years at any level is Mike Beebe. Without an equally good replacement Arkansas will become Michigan, Wisconsin or Virginia...a state run by anti-government Bible-beaters. I was never a McDaniel supporter due to his behavior in and out of office, none of it concerning his penis, which I don't care about. He acted apolitical making it impossible to figure out where he stood....except for standing for himself at all times.

The national and state Democratic Party gave us Senator NOozman, not Bill Halter. The dishonesty of Garland County Democrats gave us Senator NOozman, not Bill Halter. What's shocking to the Arkansas Democratic Party about Bill Halter is that he isn't a pretend Democrat with an soft chewy Republican Conservative center. Bill is an old fashioned Arkansas Democrat, an FDR & LBJ Democrat who cares about working folks. Who cares about education for every kid. Who isn't interested in dirty tricks and wants to move Arkansas out of the 20th century, if not the 19th.

We do need him in the Senate, but first we need him in the governor's chair. We must remember the election of 1872 when the radical Republican Powell Clayton was such a terror as Arkansas Governor that both Democrats & Republicans joined hands to elect Powell to the Senate just to get him out of Arkansas. That shows how important it is that we have a good person as our Governor.

Douche Boozman, from his Senate seat can deny food and medicine to sick kids, refuse to help our returning veterans, but his actions don't hurt Arkansas like they would if he was our governor. Arkansas is much safer with 6 bad guys in DC than it would be with 1 bad guy in Little Rock. That's how important it is to replace Beebe with Halter. That's why my family will work hard to get Bill Halter elected as our next governor.

The only politician on the scene with a ghost of a chance of moving Arkansas forward is Bill Halter. Look what he did in the absolutely worthless office of Lt. Governor. Yes I'm mighty beholden because my award winning 2nd daughter is in the 3rd year of a quality college education she would have never had except for Bill Halter. In 20 years we'll all be super thankful Bill Halter made it possible for record numbers of Arkansas students to enter college and finally lift our state out of 48th spot.

Governor Halter now! Senator Halter later! Maybe even President Halter someday when we run out of Bush & Clintons to run. I have hope!

Dear Caleb:

Just to be clear -- I am in no way a supporter, campaign staffer, etc., for Mr. Halter. I don't like the man one bit. (Almost as much as I don't like you.) You are one fishy character and the stink lingers far after you've gone on to the next cash cow. Quit clawing up the ass of the state Democratic Party and do something original for a change. You are an embarrassment to the LGBT community and to Democrats in Arkansas in general. And now back to ignoring you in hopes you'll disappear.

Once again you are not an Arkansan. The only embarassment is how you attack me without reason. I guess in your world it's guilty till proven innocent. I guess my embarassment didn't bother Dianne Curry when I was her campaign manager for a strong third term to the LR School Board and beat a machine. I guess my embarassment didn't bother Charles Armstrong who I was campaign manager to and who we won a come from behind win for the State Legislature. I guess my embarassment didn't keep me from being voted on the State Committee. I guess my embarassment didn't keep our U.S. Senator from inviting me to the Presidential Inauguration. And "CALEB" is my middle name. My name is Drew. It always has been. Some call me Andrew Caleb. Some chose to call me Caleb against my wishes. The only embarassment is your attacks on me. Now return to the subject at hand because your 15 seconds of shame in attacking me are up. Poof and be gone before someone drops a house on you as well, you witch!
