The big crowds that flock to the big show at Walton Arena in Fayetteville Friday for Walmart stockholders are scheduled to be greeted by a giant, bloody inflatable pig in a crate as part of a protest aimed at getting Walmart to stop buying pork from producers that confine pigs to small gestation crates. Gruesome details here.

Said a release from Mercy for Animals:

“It is reprehensible and not in the interest of shareholders that Walmart’s Board of Directors continues to support such horrible animal cruelty,” said MFA’s executive director, Nathan Runkle. “Walmart’s Board is ignoring regulatory changes, the actions of Walmart’s competitors, and consumer opinion on this issue, and that has the potential to hurt share value. Walmart is supporting blatant animal abuse by buying pork from suppliers that condemn intelligent and social animals to a lifetime of misery and deprivation in crates where they can’t even turn around, walk, lie down comfortably, or engage in other natural behaviors. The moment is now for Walmart to get with the times and follow the lead of all its major competitors by phasing out cruel cages for mother pigs.”
