The police chief of Mayflower wound up behind bars yesterday morning, arrested and charged with tampering with public records, a class-D felony. Chief Billy Paul Baker was booked into the Faulkner County Jail and quickly released on $2,500 bond.

Baker has been suspended with pay since June, when he was accused of giving misleading statements to the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and falsifying training records — specifically, paperwork that said his officers had taken a radar speed gun certification class in Nov. 2011. The case came to light after a Mayflower officer complained that he’d been awarded a certificate for taking the class, even though no such class had been given.
